Niseko Powder Skiing

Overview

Niseko is great for powder skiing. We went in February and it consistently snowed anywhere from 8"-12" throughout the day / night. December 2024 was bonkers where it dumped snow every night. Keep in mind that this is a very Aussie / US heavy resort area. You're not going to experience a ton of Japanese culture here. In fact, we ended up running into 3-4 families from Palisades there at the same time.

Highlights

Niseko United is made up of 4 ski areas that are lift connected at the top of the mountain. There is decent inbound skiing, but most of the great skiing that you hear about it accessed through a series of side country and back country gates. Nothing is too technically challenging but it's good to get a guide since if you go too low on the mountain, you end up having to hike out.

Where to Eat

Rakuichi Soba

We didn’t go here, but it came highly recommended. It’s kind of in the middle of nowhere, so you need to arrange car / taxi service to get there and back. Only 2 seatings a day. Husband and wife team that makes soba noodles in front of you. Make reservations 90 days in advance.

Travel Tips

For many restaurants, you need to book out pretty early (2-3 months) in advance of your trip. Many places will force you to select a course (pre-fixe menu) and pre-pay for the food in advance.

If you are skiing on the Ikon Pass, go to the ticket office in the morning and trade it in for an actual ticket. The Ikon Pass does scan at the RFID gates, but it isn't super reliable.

We shipped our skis to our hotel which was tremendously helpful as we spent a few days in Tokyo prior to coming to Niseko. There's a network of couriers (Yamato Taq Q Bin) that can take your bags from Narita / Haneda and send it in advance.

Japan is conservative when it comes to gate openings / closing. If you do go out of bounds, it's wise to rent (or bring your own) avalanche pack. They don't blast anything out of bounds so it's critical.
